The tasting house resides in an old farm house that was remodeled by Tom Shank, the owner, and local contractors. The entrance is handicap-accessible. Weathered barn siding from old barns torn down near the estate cover the interior walls and ceiling to provide a rustic look. The tasting bar is covered with customized hammered-copper art work. The tasting room also has a full kitchen and two handicap-accessible bathrooms with one designated family-friendly.
American Winery was established in the Spring of 2014 when the first grapevines were planted at the estate in Wauseon, Ohio. Mother Nature brought on a “Polar Vortex” that winter with temperatures dipping to -14° F, testing the vitality and endurance of the vines. Surprisingly, 90 percent of the vines survived and have produced bumper crops of succulent grapes ever since. The estate vineyard occupies 3 acres of vines growing in some of the richest soil in Fulton County, Ohio. The winery also has a vineyard in Williams County, Ohio where the white grapes are grown.
Owner, Tom Shank, began making wine from the Wauseon vineyard in 2015. His interest in winemaking began with his father, Kermit E. Shank. Tom’s father was a chemical engineer by training, so it made perfect sense to apply those skills to the art of making wine. Tom pursued college in Montana and at that time developed a vision for owning a winery where he could custom-blend wines for people to enjoy together. Through hard work, patience, and his passion for creating unique wines from his own vineyard, Tom opened American Winery in March 2019.
Connie Simon, the Viticulturist (grape manager) is a Fulton County native. Growing up on a dairy farm, the love of farming is deeply instilled in her, as is a love for hard work. Connie oversees the vines from first buds to managing pruning and training the vines to harvest.
Our philosophy reflects the vitality and endurance of our vines that survived the Polar Vortex of 2014. In so doing, we strive to provide a “Unique Experience in Every Bottle” that embodies the bounty of Mother Nature. Tom Shank, our Vintner (winemaker), perfects each small batch of custom wine to ensure the best taste and quality. However, the real test is you. We opened a Tasting House at the estate for you to sample our wines in a relaxed setting to find the blends you like best and provide us with ideas for new blends.
